What Is Microneedling?
Microneedling is a skincare treatment where fine needles are used to improve skin surface imperfections. By inducing a series of very tiny, controlled “micro-wounds,” this treatment process, called Percutaneous Collagen Synthesis Therapy, stimulates collagen production in the skin.
Collagen contributes to the structural integrity of the skin, resulting in a more youthful appearance and a healthier complexion. Since collagen naturally decreases with age, it is important to assist your skin in producing more of it with skincare treatments like microneedling facials.
What Does Microneedling Do?
Microneedling is an amazing skincare tool, targeting skin issues like wrinkles, pigmentation, and scarring. Over time, microneedling has been shown to create a 400% increase in collagen production. The controlled injury process opens up your skin with tiny tears and once the healing process begins, promotes collagen production. This in turn helps fill in and smooth out wrinkles and fine lines with newer, smoother skin.
What to Expect from a Microneedling Session
Before a microneedling session, a topical numbing agent is applied to the skin to reduce discomfort. A microneedling pen, a pen that vibrates microneedles, is used to open channels through the skin until the surface has been treated. Once the treatment is over, your own platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is applied to assist with healing and help collagen production.
For a few days following treatment, redness, mild irritation, and swelling are common side effects. This is a sign of your skin’s healing process.
Is There a Difference Between Microneedling and a ‘Vampire Facial’?
Made famous thanks to a Kim Kardashian selfie, a vampire facial involves the same microneedling process but with an extra step to stimulate even more collagen growth. When Platelet-Rich Plasma (otherwise known as a PRP Facial) is combined with a microneedling session, it becomes known as a ‘vampire facial’. First, blood is drawn and then put into a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets. Platelets, also called thrombocytes, are blood cells that cause blood clots and other necessary growth healing functions in the body. Once extracted, the PRP is then applied to the skin during the microneedling treatment for optimal healing results. More healing equates to more collagen and elastin growth, which means skin will look smoother, younger, and brighter!
PRP has been used in sports medicine for several years. Interestingly, platelet-rich plasma therapy, specifically injections, is a treatment method that can harness the body’s natural ability to heal itself, and increase the natural growth factors for new tissue. The creation of the Vampire Facial is a direct extension of these medical findings within the skincare world. When combined with a proper anti-aging regimen, microneedling and PRP facials can help provide fast results.
