Nearly every day, we are bombarded with the newest skincare products, cosmetic treatments, or crazy routines that promise perfectly glowing, youthful-looking skin. But is there any truth to these skincare claims?
We’ve seen thousands of clients at our Newport Beach med spa over the years and our team of professionals definitely have their opinions on what works and what doesn’t! The answer? Customized, personalized, and professional grade skincare regimens for each and every person is the secret to healthy, glowing skin.
Here are 5 reasons on why – and how- you should invest in your skin with a customized skin care regimen.
1. There is no ‘one size fits all’ skincare routine.
Do you wear make-up daily? Do you smoke? Do you already receive a chemical peel on a regular basis? Do you battle rosacea? Genetic factors along with lifestyle decisions all affect your skin’s growth process! When you consult a professional, we take a holistic approach and recommend skincare products and treatments that are personalized for you. What works for one person will not necessarily work for another.
2. Professional grade products like ZO Skin Health are based on years of science, data, and user analysis. Not on skincare fads!
FDA approved products like ZO Skin Health are safe, medical-grade, and target specific skin issues and concerns. When a cosmetic product is FDA approved, it means it is regulated to contain only the ingredients it says it contains, and meets strict standards on application results. Meaning if it says it reduces fine lines and wrinkles by 15% in 15 days, then it really does!
At our medical spa, we advocate for the ZO peel because only licensed professionals can apply it. This allows it to be customized to your skin’s needs and ensures it works quickly and effectively. A 3-step peel like ZO is very different from an over the counter peel, as it contains a higher percentage of acids and retinol, too.
3. Establishing a relationship with a skin care professional ensures you have guidance.
Skin changes over time, and as such, it is often necessary to switch up your cosmetic products for lasting results. With any ZO Skin Health treatment performed at Beauty Boost, we will make sure you’re getting results and follow up with you at least once a month.
Have you even meandered through Sephora confused on the millions of products and wondering which one is right for you? We got you! Unlike over the counter skin care products, a licensed skin care professional is someone to contact (at any time!) in case you have questions on what is happening to your skin or how to use the products.
4. Skin Care products work best with routine facial services.
The skincare you use at home keeps your skin in tip top shape on a daily basis, while in-office procedures like chemical peels and microneedling gives your skin a much needed boost. Chemical peels and microneedling are skincare treatments that activate cellular turnover. Without physically removing your old skin cells, expensive products will not penetrate as deeply into your skin. You’ve paid a lot of money on skincare, you don’t want to waste those expensive products!
Depending on your skin concern or beauty wish, you may want quarterly or bi-annual chemical peels, microneedling once a year, and regular cosmetic injections. Again, this is why we advocate for a holistic approach to skincare to ensure you have the most natural glowing skin possible.
5. You’ll actually see physical changes in your skin.
When you invest in a customized and professional skin care regimen, you will see the beauty results you are looking for. Guaranteed! ZO Skin Health and other medical spa services will bring your skin back to a youthful, glowing state that you will be unable to achieve using just anything at home. We promise your skin has never looked or felt so healthy!
The perfect skincare routine according to an advanced practitioner
Daily skincare
Beautiful skin starts with a basic daily regimen that includes medical-grade skincare solutions from your provider. We recommend starting with Dr. Zein Obagi’s Getting Skin Ready (GSR) routine:
- Gentle Cleanser to remove impurities and surface debris
- Exfoliating Polish to safely scrub the skin without tearing it like many other products do
- Complexion Renewal Pads to start the exfoliation process with salicylic and glycolic acid and to bring the skin to the correct pH to absorb the remaining products better
After completing the GSR routine, use the Daily Power Defense to aid in DNA repair. Over time, damage from the environment and the aging process will cause dark spots and other changes. DNA repair with peptides, ceremides, antioxidants, and retinol will reduce these changes.
From there, we recommend that patients use the 10% Vitamin C Self-Activating Serum to provide antioxidants and aid in repairing sun damage. This serum includes tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate, which is one of only two forms of vitamin C that can be accepted by the skin.
For sunscreen, we recommend Sunscreen+Primer Broad Spectrum SPF 30. This sunscreen is a complete mineral sunblock with 8.2% titanium dioxide, a mild tint, antioxidants, and makeup primer. Many of our patients say they love the feel of the lightweight mouse finish on their skin.
After applying these basic skincare products, you can begin customization. Everyone’s skin is a little different. You may want to use products for brightening, melasma control, or even aggressive anti-aging exfoliation with retinol.
Semi-Regular Skin Treatments
You will want to supplement your daily regimen with in-office treatments. Certain skin care procedures will keep your skin youthful and improve absorption of the products you use in your daily regimen. We recommend the following schedule:
- Facials every 4-8 weeks
- Microneedling every quarter or biannually
- Chemical peels 1-2 times per year (especially in the fall after the summer months)
- Injectables every 3-4 months
