Demand workloads, young children, sleepless nights, and even life’s general daily stresses can create tired looking eyes that look aged beyond their years. Luckily, under eye fillers can help rid us of these pesky deep, dark hollows and bags under the eyes for a more rested and youthful appearance.

First, why do dark circles and hollows form underneath eyes?

Because the epidermal (skin) area is very thin around the eyes, this area tends to be the most vulnerable to any internal and external stress factors. The most common symptoms we see from these factors are puffy bags, dark circles, and hollow looking eye sockets. All of which can make you appear older than you really are!

Tired looking eyes can be caused by a number of factors including:

  • Genetics – predispositions to medical conditions like thyroid disease, or hyperpigmentation, can increase dark circles beneath your eyes.
  • Fatigue – lack of sleep can cause fluid to build up underneath your eyes, causing them to appear puffy.
  • Dehydration – without the proper amount of water (50-80 oz per day minimum), the skin beneath your eyes can sink inwards towards the bone.
  • Lifestyle – smoking and excess drinking restrict oxygen in blood vessels causing dullness and broken capillaries around the eyes.
  • Age – loss of fat and collagen make the dark blood vessels beneath your skin become more visible, causing blue and gray ‘darkness’.
  • Allergies – when you have an allergic reaction, your body releases ‘histamines’, which cause your blood vessels to dilate and become more visible beneath your skin. Rubbing and itching your eyes can cause irritation, too!
  • Bone loss – a ‘hollowing’ look is a result of age-related bone loss around eye sockets (aka periorbital areas).

Are dark circles permanent if untreated?

For some people, dark circles are temporary and can be treated with some much needed rest and relaxation. But for most people, especially those older than 30 years and those who have always struggled with under eye hollows, tired looking eyes will never go away. That’s where cosmetic treatments like under eye injections can really help people boost a youthful appearance.

Common Questions & Answers about Under-Eye Filler Injections

Before and After Undereyes Treatment | Beauty Boost Med Spa in Newport Beach, CA

Under eye fillers are a non-surgical, low-maintenance option for filling in hollows and treating dark circles under the eyes. Here are some common questions about this treatment that we have answered at our Newport Beach medical spa. If you have any questions or concerns about under eye fillers that are not listed here, please do not hesitate to message our team or schedule a free consultation!

What cosmetic issues do under eye fillers help with?

Under eye fillers directly target beauty imperfections and promote a healthy, well-rested and youthful look. Some of the main reasons patients receive this injection are:

  • Dark circles in tear troughs (the grooves between the lower eyelid and cheek)
  • Sunken eye sockets
  • Blending under-eye bags

Are under eye facial injections considered fillers?

Yes, under eye injections are technically in the facial filler domain. This means that we use FDA approved injectables like Restylane and Juvederm. These fillers volumize creases and folds in the facial areas that have lost fat and collagen, which is the main culprit behind tired eyes and the dark circles that form because of age.

How are under eye fillers different from other cosmetic injections and treatments?

The difference between other facial fillers (like jawline boosts and lip injections) is the placement of the injection. Here at our Newport Beach facility, a qualified injector will inject Restylane-L or Juvederm Volbella XC in the tear trough (i.e. the under eye area) as well as the outer eye area. This results in the best, most natural-looking outcome since it directly targets the skin around the eyes that has lost elasticity and is sagging.

Please note that under eye fillers are not Botox related in any way. Botox is a muscle-inhibitor.

What is the step by step process for under-eye fillers?

Marking the injection zone

The first step before injecting any fillers is discussing the plan and marking your face to label the targeted eye areas. We have found this puts the patient at ease knowing the areas of the final look.

Numbing the injection zones

Because the eye area is very thin, and the face is a sensitive area, we rub numbing cream into the marked areas. This usually takes a few minutes to activate and then we are ready to inject.

Injecting under the eye

Once we begin injecting, you should feel the area gradually begin to plump. Don’t be surprised if we gently push the injection, which should not hurt, to distribute the filler into place under the skin.

Will I bruise with under eye injections?

Lucky for our patients, there is ZERO bruising with the technique we use to inject under eye filler! We use a blunt tip cannula to perform under eye filler which eliminates the need for any needles, causing bleeding, bruising and other adverse events. This technique allows you to enjoy your results immediately without any downtime!

Are under eye fillers for women only? Or can men receive the treatment to help with dark circles?

Tired eyes are not just female problems! The critical component to a successful under eye filler treatment, regardless of sex, is understanding the exact relationships of facial bones, ligaments, muscles, and facial fat pads. Men are safe – and always welcome at our medical spa – to receive under eye fillers to treat their dark circles and puffy bags.

When will I see noticeable improvements in my under eye bags after an injection?

Immediately After injection! We will follow-up with you 2 weeks after your procedure to ensure the filler settled beautifully and if touch-ups are needed, we will do it then!

How often will I need to receive under eye fillers for lasting results?

Under eye injections provide a youthful, restored appearance that typically last up to 1 year. The good news is that hyaluronic acid fillers – like Restylane and Juvederm – also stimulate collagen synthesis by pushing on fibroblasts (the cells responsible for collagen production) in the skin. Over time, this triggers your own body to produce collagen by itself, boosting a younger and more natural appearance. Yes!

What are some at-home skincare solutions that can help tired eyes in between under eye filler treatments?

Here at Beauty Boost, we are all about the self-care in between treatment sessions! This will help extend the longevity of your under eye fillers, as well as reduce stress that may be increasing symptoms like dark circles.

Remember, at-home treatments for reducing under eye circles may help somewhat, but will not fix the problem long term and may not work for everyone.

Some home remedies include:

  • Jade Roller
  • Cucumbers or soaked tea bags
  • Makeup
  • High quality eye-cream such as the ZO Eye Brightening Creme
